B“MEADOW CROFT”   ----

Meadow Croft was the name of the summer family estate of John Ellis Roosevelt, first cousin of President Theodore Roosevelt.  John Roosevelt had the place built in 1891.  He and his wife, Nan, spent summers here with their three daughters as a retreat to escape the heat of the summers in Manhattan.

President Theodore visited here in 1903.  He came out to Meadow Croft on horseback from his home, Sagamore Hill, which is located in Oyster Bay.                                                                                                                                                                                                                 Meadow Croft is located at 299 Middle Road at the Bayport-Sayville border immediately west of the Browns River bridge. Today, the estate covers about seventy-five pristine wooded acres.

Since the 1970’s, Meadow Croft is a Suffolk County Park.  Bayport Heritage Association maintains the inside of the main house and has restored it back to its heyday of 1910.  BHA conducts tours of the main house, outbuildings & grounds every Sunday at 1 PM and 3 PM June through October.
